After a decade of corporate career-building Joanna gifted herself time to seriously pursue her artistic instincts. She graduated with an Associate Degree from Adelaide Central School of Art (ACSA) in 2007.

Now, she enjoys an unusual but satisfying working balance, wearing two distinct hats. Mid-week she is a Project Controls specialist at a city firm consulting to Engineering, Construction and Mining clients. Friday to Monday is dedicated to her artistic practice.

Joanna Poulson paints in oils at her light-filled garden studio
in Prospect, Adelaide.

Joanna's work brings a present-day perspective to the significant Australian Tonalist painting movement that progressed throughout the twentieth century, initiated by the influential Max Meldrum.

At ACSA Joanna studied under masters of tonal realism, Anna Platten and Daryl Austin. She is constantly inspired by the work of other contemporary artists, citing Alison Mitchell, Chelsea Gustafsson, Deidre But-Husaim, Gerhard Richter, Louise Feneley, Lucy Culliton, Michael Zavros and Tim Maguire as current influences.

"I love that I can mix and make colours. I know there is chemistry that makes it all possible but after years of painting and understanding colour mixing, it’s become instinctual. I relate it to having learnt a new language. Having studied French and Italian and being able to write and speak these languages evokes a feeling similar to when I mix colours, without needing a ‘dictionary’ as such."

A trip to Tokyo and Kyoto in 2010 focused Joanna's artistic eye.

She was captivated by blossoms in the context of Japanese gardens and temples. The seed of her current obsession with nature's incredible variety of blooms was planted. As Joanna's studio garden brings natural beauty into her life every day, so she intends her artworks to bring the colours and wonder of the natural world into collectors' homes.

"I’m drawn to colour and in most instances, bright colours which lift the mood of a space, and the viewer."

Photographic effects are an ongoing influence.

These include background blur, Kodachrome palettes, enhanced saturation and high contrast.

"Before I even put paint to canvas there are many steps involved. I work from photos that I’ve taken of plants and flowers which capture the blurred colours in gardens and nature. I study the photos intensely before I land on a composition. I need to feel an emotional reaction. It takes many hours and multiple layers of paint to complete one of my paintings, so it is a commitment I want to be sure of and feel a connection to, before I even draw up the canvas."
